Ugandan athletes Josua Cheptegei and Jacob Kiplimo have officially withdrawn from the 5000m at the ongoing 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
The development was confirmed through a statement issued by Uganda Athletics team coach Faustino Kiwa.
“I wish to inform Ugandans that our heroes Joshua Cheptegei and Jacob Kiplimo have officially withdrawn from the 500m race due on Wednesday 7th August 2024,” the statement partly reads.
The sad and emotional development is due to the failure of the duo’s muscles to recover after the electric 10000m race on Friday.
“This follows their failure to fully recover from the gruelling 10000m race in which both athletes competed on Friday 2nd August, 2024.”
“The event left them with fatigued legs and arms muscle pains. Efforts by the physio teams to resuscitate the athletes to their full normal form has not been successful.”
After the shocking withdraw of the duo, Oscar Chelimo remains as the only Ugandan in the 5000m race that will start with heats on Wednesday before the final on Saturday.
