Lugazi secured a 1-0 victory against Express in the Uganda Premier League encounter at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo on Tuesday.
Oliver Mbekeka’s reign at Lugazi started with a victory away from home after sacking Sadick Ssempigi.
Express goalkeeper Emmanuel Kalyowa was forced into two quick saves to deny a hungry Lugazi side under the opening 10 minutes.
In the 20th minute, Lugazi’s custodian Emuran Fahad made a full stretch save to punch away Saidi Kyeyune’s curling freekick.
Six minutes later, Sam Ssemugugu broke the deadlock to place the visitors ahead. The forward nodded home Freedom Mungudit’s delivery.
Geoffrey Gagganga nearly levelled matters at the stroke of halftime, but his flying header went inches above the goal frame.
At the start of the second stanza, Express made a double change, introducing Rashid Kawawa and Micheal Kimera for Alpha Ssali and Derrick Ngobi.
The visitors returned to the second stanza with rejuvenated energy, but Lugazi’s backline stood tall and firm.
In the 70th minute, Mungudit had a big chance to extend Lugazi’s lead but failed to beat Kalyowa, who made a big save in a one on one situation.
The victory takes Lugazi to the 13th position with five points in six games of the campaign.
Express remain fifth on the log with eight points ending their unbeaten run at home.
It’s an emotional victory for the newcomers who had gone five games without attaining maximum points.
