President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni officially commissioned the High Altitude Training Centre in Teryet on Wednesday, December 12, 2024.
In a vibrant ceremony, President Museveni inaugurated the state-of-the-art facility following the completion of its first phase.
While addressing the crowd, he reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting sports and fostering development in the Sebei region.
“We (the government) are ready to continue supporting the sports industry,” said Museveni. “We pledge to our gallant athletes that we shall continue walking with them towards excellence and victory.”
The High Altitude Training Centre represents a significant milestone for Uganda’s sports industry. It provides a platform to nurture raw talent and includes modern facilities such as an athletic track, an artificial turf, hostels with comfortable rooms, a dining hall, and a kitchen.
Situated in a high-altitude area, the facility offers an ideal environment for athletes to develop endurance and enhance their performance. According to Peter Ogwang, the State Minister for Sports, several athletes have already expressed interest in utilizing the new facility.
Notably, celebrated athletes like Joshua Cheptegei, Peruth Chemutai, and Jacob Kiplimo have trained at the center ahead of their continental competitions.
The facility is also expected to attract international athletes, boosting sports tourism in Uganda.
The Sebei region, known for producing legendary athletes such as Moses Kipsiro, Stephen Kiprotich, Cheptegei, Kiplimo, and Chemutai, continues to solidify its reputation as a hub for athletic excellence.
