- URA 1-1 NEC
URA FC and NEC FC shared the spoils in a hard-fought 1-1 draw during their Uganda Premier League clash at Nakivubo Stadium on Thursday evening.
URA head coach Alex Isabirye made two changes to his lineup, bringing in Rogers Omedwa and James Begisa. Under the floodlights, the two teams battled evenly from start to finish.
NEC FC had the first chances of the match, with Paul Mucureezi testing URA goalkeeper Rogers Omedwa on two occasions. However, Omedwa was alert to deny both attempts.
URA’s first clear opportunity came when Ivan Ahimbisibwe capitalized on a mistake by Ibrahim Kiyemba, unleashing a powerful shot from distance, only for NEC goalkeeper Hannington Ssebwalunyo to make a stunning save.
The breakthrough arrived in the 23rd minute. A poor header from NEC’s Rashid Okocha fell to Godfrey Ssekibengo, who drilled a low shot into the bottom left corner to give URA the lead.
URA could have doubled their advantage in the 32nd minute, but Moses Aliro and James Begisa failed to capitalize on a golden opportunity with the goal wide open.
NEC returned from the break as a rejuvenated side, creating several chances to level the game. Their persistence paid off when URA’s Hudu Mulikyi was sent off in the 71st minute for retaliating against Enock Ssebagala.
With a numerical advantage, NEC piled on the pressure. They eventually equalized when Joseph Ssemujju’s strike found the back of the net following a defensive lapse by URA.
Both sides had opportunities to snatch victory in the dying moments. In the 89th minute, URA defender Geriga Atendele courageously blocked Ssemujju’s effort, taking a painful knock to the head.
On the other end, Paul Mucureezi missed a glorious chance in stoppage time, firing his shot straight into the legs of Enock Walusimbi.
The result sees NEC FC maintain their position at the top of the table with 23 points, while URA FC moves up to seventh place with 15 points.
